If you enjoy Pinterest on a regular basis as I do, I'm sure you've seen the variety of collages that people create on their walls. All are slightly different, some very colorful and others one tone. Yet, each in their own way brings something special to a room, and makes you feel at home right away. So how do you make your own? Here are a few tips and tricks to help you... I decided to create a collage sticking with one color theme and identical frames. The idea behind this was that by using basic frames, the pictures would pop more. Also, we wanted to paint the wall, and didn't want the frames to disappear into the color. Our first step was painting the wall, so we put several colors up and lived with them for a day. This will help you see what the color will look like through out the day in different lighting. We decided to paint the wall dark gray, so by doing a which color scheme, each piece of the collage would stand out, yet still look cohesive. The first important thing is to obviously know the dimensions of your wall. It's usually best to pick a wall that is large and one that "stands alone". What I mean by that is the feature wall of a room. Typically when you walk into a room, there is one wall (blank or not) that stands out more than the others. This wall often has a couch against it, a dining room set in front of it, or possibly an entry way or console table. Once you have picked the wall, visualize the amount of space on the wall you want to take up. You can make an estimate that will help you when shopping for collage items. For example, if I have a wall that is 12' x 9', I will estimate a space of 8' x 5'. It is probably best to leave 3-4' below the lowest part of your collage to avoid bumping any of the hanging items off the wall. Now grab that tape measure, and head to your favorite wall decor store. I always find my favorites at Target, World Market, and Home Goods Side Note: It's a great idea to use things around your house if you already have them. Mixing and matching small and large frames can easily be done following the same steps! Because I was on quite the budget for this project, I decided to stop at Target first. I walked directly to the home decor section, and began going through each aisle. I already knew that the color I wanted to stick to was white, so this made it easy. I started grabbing all of the frames, wall art, and basic decor that I could find that would fit with the color scheme. To keep the wall interesting, especially if you stick with one color scheme, try to find variety of textures, shapes, and dimensions. I added wire baskets to add a 3-D element to the wall. Once I had gotten everything together, I went into an empty aisle and put everything on the ground. I then started the arranging. I should warn you now, you are going to get a variety of strange looks from people passing by, but when you get it home on your wall, it'll all be worth it!
At this point, you should move all the items around, stand in all different directions to look at it, and swap things in and out. While doing this, do your best to stay in the estimated limit of space that you decided on before shopping. After you figure out your favorite layout, very important, take a picture! Trust me, you will forget exactly how you had it set up, and it'll never be the same. Once you have paid for all the items, don't forget that part, head home and get excited! Before hanging everything up, I suggest laying out all the items as you did in the store, and see how you like it. As you can see in the pictures, we slightly changed our setup once we got home and saw everything in place. Then, one by one remove the item from the floor set up, and hang it on the wall. Next thing you know, you've got the perfect wall collage without any extra 'mistake' holes in the wall.
